THE ORSON PERSPECTIVE

George Orson Welles (6 May 1915 – 10 October 1985) was an American actor, director, writer and producer who is remembered for his innovative work in radio, theatre and film. He is considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.

In 1938, Welles gained immediate international fame as the director and narrator of a radio adaptation of H. G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds, which caused widespread panic because many listeners thought that an invasion by extraterrestrial beings was in fact occurring. His first film was Citizen Kane (1941), which is consistently ranked as the greatest film ever made, and which he co-wrote, produced, directed and starred in.

Welles was an outsider to the studio system, and struggled for creative control on his projects early on with the major film studios in Hollywood. Welles's political activities were noted in the Report of Communist Influence in Radio and Television (an anti-Communist journal), which named 151 actors, writers, musicians, broadcast journalists, and others in the context of purported Communist manipulation of the entertainment industry. He was in Europe during the height of the Red Scare, thereby adding one more reason for the Hollywood establishment to ostracize him.

For the film The Third Man, Orson Welles arrived in Vienna coming from Rome on 17 November 1948 and resided in the Hotel Astoria (Kärntnerstraße). He stayed about 14 days in Vienna.

The Hotel Orient in Vienna’s Inner City is a notorious location for adventures of a certain kind, also called the "first house in town". After serving as a rather tenebrous inn from the 17th century, it was transformed into a hotel for special interests in 1896. Some scenes of the The Third Man were filmed there. Mr. Welles also stayed in the hotel after-hours, enjoying the burlesque ambience. The hotel still exists today while renovated in the original style.
